Spring Camporee 2025: Zombie Apocalypse

Updated: Aug 6

Black Otter District | Camporee Highlights | May 16-18, 2025

Scouts in Billings faced a full-blown zombie outbreak at the Black Otter District’s Spring Camporee in May — and Troop 23 was ready for it! While going through real Scouting classes like bear spray and fire extinguisher training, we also had to survive waves of zombies wandering through camp. If a zombie came near, we had to freeze in place so they wouldn’t “see” us — unless you were one of the unlucky Scouts who got spotted and chased!

A Zombie Response Team was on standby, charging in throughout the day to scare off the zombies using loud noises and distractions. The whole weekend was packed with chaos, laughs, and learning.

By the end, a Blackhawk helicopter actually landed in camp, delivering the antidote — root beer barrel candy! The Zombie Response Team finished the mission by pelting the remaining zombies with water balloons.

The weekend also had a more serious side. Around 120 Scouts attended, and 20 Scouts and leaders earned the Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award. Camp Director Alan Lohof and the Black Otter team created an unforgettable mix of fun and skill-building that wrapped up with classic campfire skits, songs, and an Order of the Arrow tap-out ceremony under the stars.

It was an awesome experience Troop 23 won’t forget!
